Variegated Alphabetic Confections

The other day I picked up a couple of sacks of green and red M&M’s. But they are not Christmas M&M’s. No. As one of the young students in my home school co-op English class pointed out, they are “Happy Holiday Mix” M&M’s.
There is, as far as I know only one holiday popularly connected to the colors red and green—but that’s the Holiday That Dare Not Speak Its Name. It is the “Happy” Holiday, though it was my impression that all holidays are meant to be happy, so I’m not sure what that adjective is supposed to accomplish.
In the spirit of the Holiday That Dare Not Speak Its Name—that is to say, in the gleeful spirit of ambiguity—I am going to refuse to call M&M’s by their right name anymore. They are now “alphabetic confections”—for I do not want to marginalize any L’s or N’s, K’s or O’s or other particular members of the alphabetic family who do not share the special status of M’s in Candyland.
Nor again would it be fair to purple, blue, brown, orange, teal or the other hues to single out reds and greens for special distinction, since all colors alike are to be praised—or rather, none of them are, so let us not mention particulars.
Ironically, I am trying to finish off these candies before the Philip’s Fast begins tomorrow; for we are on the verge not of the “Holiday Season” but a season of penitential preparation for the Feast to come. But I find that while I was writing up this blog entry, the children have polished off the last of the Variegated Alphabetic Confections, God love them.
Thanks for that, Eric. I had a feeling that it wouldnt be long before a pre-Advent post came from you.
I wonder…can you post something on the Philip fast in the Byzantine tradition. As we approach advent, it would be good formation for your readers to better enable us to embrace the season in all its richness of its poverty, and the poverty of its richness. Post, I pray thee.
On the sweet (candy) topic…may I direct you to a post of mine on my poor blog..entitled ‘another haribo birthday party’. with blessings… James

It’s my first time to hear of the “Philip’s fast.” Sure would like to know more about it.

Ah yes, the “Holiday That dare Not Speak Its Name”. That’s when we celebrate the birth of the Child of our Father and/or Mother in heaven. Really makes you feel warm and fuzzy, doesn’t it?
It has gone from Merry Christmas to Merry Xmas now it is Happy Holiday. What will it be next year? Now, lets all stand outside our favorite store, hold hands and sing that old time Season favorite:
“Deck the stores with advertising, fa la la la la la la;
Tis the season for merchandising, fa la la la la la la”.
It is amazing how far “political correctness” has gone. God forbid that we should offend Muslims or other religions, but please feel free to offend Christians all you want because they are so forgiving.
